COLLAGE OR LAYERING
Making a collage involves shape as well as texture. Examples of collage artists, just to mention a few, are Matisse, Picasso, Motherwell and Hans Hoffman.
Unlock your imagination with experimental techniques. You will be able to revitalize your work almost immediately.
Elements of design a collage takes into account color, value, shape, size, line, movement and texture.
Each color has various properties such as hue, value, intensity and temperature.
Hue, is a name, value, is the degree of light and dark, intensity is the level of saturation from gray to bright, temperature would be warm reds to cool blues.
Shapes can be both positive and negative. Shapes can be made interesting by varying size, overlapping and using a geometric or organic design.
Texture ranges from rough to smooth. Smoothness is more impersonal. Roughness creates energy.
A line can bring energy or stability to a design. Stability can be achieved through the use of straight, horizontal or vertical lines. Diagonal lines are dynamic. Contour lines help us to define shapes. Curved lines evoke the organic. Your lines may be gestural or deliberate. Horizontal movement is calming, vertical movement suggests strength and stability. Diagonal movement can be used to create tension. Circular movement encourages the viewer to “go round again,” revisiting parts of a painting.
